Welcome to the first of a new series of fortnightly newsletters sharing progress for our charity’s aims, and spanning a broad spectrum of ambition; from future schools and teacher trainings, to promoting access and inclusion for Waldorf Education, and celebrating creativity not just as a skill but a core human attribute.
We’ll blend updates on individual projects alongside introductions to people and teams in our communities, and for this first issue, are delighted to share:
We had always expected a wide level of interest for the Postgraduate Diploma in Waldorf Education and Creative Pedagogies that we are delivering in partnership with Bath Spa University . The programme is designed for qualified teachers, and offers masters-level study through a blend of online learning and Landcraft Retreats hosted at the Steiner Academy Hereford.
The first pioneering cohort will start their studies this coming October 2022. To be speaking to potential students from as far apart as Cambridge, the West Midlands and Italy this week, has been a welcome expansion of our growing community.
The Landcraft Retreats offer long weekends of immersion into craft and community. They provide opportunities to explore creative and embodied learning and offer an opportunity to engage in a range of artistic and creative skills that are integral to Waldorf Education. These weekends are led by expert Waldorf practitioners. They weave threads of craft and community together and invite you to deepen your own connections and networks within the cohort and learning community.
These threads of craft and community are also a strong wave of momentum towards our charity’s ongoing contribution to education.
Towards that momentum, our Board of Trustees is currently readying itself for a further exploration and expansion of long-term planning this coming September, and we continue to reach out to a number of stakeholder and community groups to hear and share their aspirations for and contributions to the heart of our work. We have met recently with colleagues from the Steiner Waldorf Schools Fellowship and the Anthroposophical Society in Great Britain as well as our own Association Members. The scale of the challenge for all educationalists in these times is to reflect deeply on how to help support our rising generations to meet the world with courage and hope, and our forms and philosophies in achieving that are in a process of deep transformation which we need to craft consciously.
We are also excited to share the first announcement of a series of Listening Posts for our Future School project. These forums will begin in Stroud in September, and repeat in November and January. We are inviting a range of supporters from a number of different projects local to Stroud, Gloucestershire, to help inform and be part of that conversation, and further details will be shared in subsequent newsletters. The founding of our future school project on these conversations reflects the heart of Waldorf Education’s model of forming a partnership with parents where, alongside a clarity in roles and responsibilities, is a care for a shared understanding of community. Fiona Carnie suggests that “schools will only become inclusive by caring for every one of their members – adults as well as children”* and the establishment of these Listening Posts is intended to support an infrastructure and culture that can underpin such inclusion.
